Here is some of the best Free software I use to keep my computer in shape.
 
 
 

Spybot – Search & Destroy is a spyware detection and removal tool. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware.

I like this tool as it is very simple to setup and easy to use and doesn’t interfere with the settings pc manufacturers tell you not to touch. The Updates are excellent and I run this on full scan mode about once a month. It has helped me remove several ‘nasties’ and the support you can get from their website is fantastic. I thoroughly recommend it.

START UP SPEED UP

Start Up Speed Up.bat is a small script designed to make your computer start faster. Just download it and click on it to set it up. Works well on my three machines.

Shudown Faster is a small script designed to make your computer shut down faster. Just download it and click on it to set it up. Works well on my three machines.

AVAST HOME EDITION ANTIVIRUS

I use Avast Free Home Edition Antivirus on a couple of machines for several reasons:

  • It is FREE.
  • It is not too heavy on the computer’s resources – unlike some of the other well known Free AV programs which I found practically hung my machine every time an email came in.
  • The regular updates are unobtrusive – it simply goes to work without you noticing it.
  • The UI (User Interface) is very straightforward & simple to use. It won’t take you long to set it up or become comfortable using it – for me, a great plus point.
  • I have found the support to be very good and responses come very quickly.
  • It is available in many languages.
  • User guides are freely available and well written.
  • I don’t honestly know if it is considered the best Free Antivirus program by the experts, but in my opinion it works very well and I would and have recommended it to everyone who asks.
 
Kompozer is a free WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Webpage HTML design program that is amazingly simple to learn and use. It is built on a Mozilla engine so is fast, reliable and backed up by wide community of developers and fans. Similar Industry standard programs such as Microsoft Frontpage or Adobe Dreamweaver can cost hundreds of dollars, so the fact it is Free is in my opinion a key advantage.

Now, I have built several sites using this program as it is very easy to follow the instructions and tips within the help files. My favourite feature is the Preview tab which allows you to check your changes before you commit & save them to the web pages.
 
One piece of advice – as it is so easy to use, it can also be easy to change something you’re not sure of so I recommend always using a backup folder on the computer and storing your original web template or html files in there and using a working folder to make your changes. That way, if something does go wrong you can simply revert back to your backup folder and all is not lost.
