How To Adjust Your Power Settings Correctly

Windows has it’s own power management functionality which can help you save energy and that’s a good thing. But, you shouldn’t do it at the expense of speed and productivity unless you absolutely have to.

As an example, if you are running you laptop as a desktop (permanently plugged in) you don’t need to turn your hard drive off after 5 minutes, your processor to throttle back when not in use or your video settings to be reduced by being set to ‘optimised for power saving’ mode.

As you are not bothered about making the battery last longer, you can speed pc up by setting all performance settings to the maximum.

Windows comes setup with ‘Balanced‘ performance which means you won’t get the best out of your system unless you change the settings pc.

To change your power settings in XP, follow these steps:

 - Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.

 - Click Power Options.

 - Select your desired Power Scheme (which best suits your use).

 - Adjust the Turn off monitor, Turn off hard disks, and System Standby settings as you want.

That’s It. If you find your pc is better or worse in the performance area you can readjust any of these at any time and you should not do any damage to or harm your machine in any way.

You can also do this with any version of Windows.

Also, I added this video as it is gives you a guide around Control Panel and is one of my favourites – you will see why when you watch it. Please do let me know what you think of it.

Finally Windows 7 Support for Your Mac

increase pcIf you’re a Mac user, there is a software called Boot Camp from Apple which is now compatible with Windows 7.

Boot Camp allows a Mac to be dual-booted into either Mac OS X or Windows, and is the solution for Appel users who don’t want to give up their Windows-only applications but would rather use Apple hardware.

Apple’s FAQs state that users will need the latest version of Mac OS X – Snow Leopard – to boot into Windows 7. There are a number of 2006 iMac and MacBook Pro models that Apple claims are incapable of running Windows 7, the full list of which can be found on Apple’s website.

Due to several issues with Nvidia graphics cards causing Blue Screens of Death and some totally black screens where nothing can be seen, Apple have setup a special help page for users having these issues with  .

For more information and to update your drivers to the latest versions, visit Apple’s support page.

Will You Be Downloading A Mobile App in 2010?

Apple Owns the Mobile App Market

From the estimated 2.5 Billion (Yes, Billion) mobile app downloads in 2009, Apple has more that 99% share according to new research, and this equates to about $4 Billion in revenue.

If the figures are right, then 2010 will see 4.5 Billion app downloads rising to 21 Billion in 2013. However, it is also reckoned that 80% will be free apps downloaded from anywhere.

So, what’s the point of this post? As the use of smartphones grows massively (and yes, I finally sold out and got mine for Xmas too) in the next 3 years, so will the opportunity for people to get in on Apple’s act by creating their own apps or app stores.

I think everyone knows a programmer within their circle of friends or aquaintances, so what are you waiting for? Get out there and get something developed, promote it and  grab some opportunity  with both hands in these times of ‘recession’.

Free Up Wasted Space

One easy & fast way to free up disk space is to remove unwanted programs, as mentioned in another post, which will speed up your pc. Another way to free up wasted disk space is to use the Disk Cleanup tool by following these steps:

  • Open My Computer, right-click Local Disk, and then click Properties.

  • On the General tab, click the Disk Cleanup button. Disk Cleanup will spend a few minutes examining your disk.

  • The Disk Cleanup dialog box opens. As you can see below it shows you exactly how much space you can free up:

That’s it. Dead Easy and Fast and you should instantly see the difference.

Another Security Hole in IE

slow windows xp

Amazing! Even though there is a new serious security hole in IE8, we are still being advised to upgrade asap.

No wonder really. If you sold someone a kettle 10 years ago (Windows times) and they kept coming back asking you to fix it again and again, wouldn’t you also try and persuade them to get the latest model?

Microsoft issued a warning telling people to upgrade their internet browser, after the zero-day exploit that was used to attack companies such as Google.

According to Microsoft’s security advisory: "the vulnerability exists as an invalid pointer reference within Internet Explorer. It is possible under certain conditions for the invalid pointer to be accessed after an object is deleted. In a specially-crafted attack, in attempting to access a freed object, Internet Explorer can be caused to allow remote code execution."

In other words, a nasty net person could get remote control of your computer. If you’re anything like me, you wonder how the hell that can happen in reality – But, believe me. I’ve seen it done and it’s scary stuff

The same issue exists also in IE7, so regardless of what version you have you should make sure you have the latest updates and patches. Simply go to Microsoft’s homepage and get them as soon as you can.

Further advice from Microsoft is to run the browser in Protected Mode and ensure users aren’t running with administrator privileges.

My advice would be to ditch IE (if you haven’t already, where have you been these last 5 years??) and switch to Firefox. It’s FREE, much more user friendly and you can get hundreds of different official (safe) add-ons to make it do almost anything you want.  As soon as I get it to make me a cup of tea three times a day as well, I’ll let you all know.

Cheers
